Phuket Vegetarian Festival: a unique island tradition

On **October 3**, Phuket kicks off the Vegetarian Festival – one of the island’s most vibrant and culturally significant events. Rooted in Chinese tradition, this celebration marks its **199th anniversary** this year, standing out as a truly unique custom not found in other provinces of Thailand.

At the heart of the festival is the worship of the Nine Emperor Gods. Interestingly, this ritual is almost forgotten in China, but on Phuket, it continues with extraordinary local flair. Streets come alive with spectacular processions: ma song with their cheeks pierced by metal rods, fire-walking ceremonies, and climbing ladders made of sharp blades – all fascinating and somewhat shocking to watch.

For tourists and investors, it’s yet another testament to Phuket’s rich cultural tapestry, while for locals, it’s an important ritual to cleanse body and soul and invite good fortune for the year ahead. During this period, the island is particularly vibrant and event-filled, making it even more attractive for living and real estate investment.
