Chalong — Phuket’s heart for living and yachting
Chalong is often called the “center of Phuket,” even though it’s slightly south of the city. That’s because it’s equally easy to reach the beaches of Kata and Karon to the west, the lively Patong, or the calm sands of Nai Harn and Rawai to the south.
Beaches nearby & the feature of Chalong
Chalong itself doesn’t have beaches for swimming — the seabed is rocky and the water is not crystal clear. But this is Phuket’s true maritime gateway. From its big bay with a long pier (so long there’s a bus running on it), boats depart daily. Yachts and speedboats head to Phi Phi (where “The Beach” with DiCaprio was filmed), Coral Island, and Racha.
The best swimming beaches are just 15 minutes away. Cross over the hill — and you’re on the soft sands of Kata or Karon. A little further south lies Nai Harn, often ranked by TripAdvisor among the best beaches in the world.
Infrastructure & active life
Chalong perfectly balances local life and tourism. There are no crowds of package tourists like in Patong, but many expats from Europe and around the world have chosen this area for their permanent home. It’s also full of yacht owners and diving enthusiasts. Here, famous sailing regattas take place, and many diving and cruise tours start from here.
For land-based activities, there are plenty of gyms and Muay Thai schools. For daily shopping — Tesco Lotus, Makro, Villa Market hypermarkets, plus cozy local fruit and seafood markets.
A bit north, in Wichit, you’ll find major shopping malls and even more supermarkets, along with international hospitals and schools.
Real estate in Chalong
Chalong is known for its “villa parks” — like cottage villages. One- and two-story homes in gated communities with pools and green streets. The most famous is Land and House, so big you can literally get lost in it. It’s especially loved by people who stay on Phuket long-term, valuing safety, calm, and being just 10-15 minutes’ drive from the sea.
Property here typically costs less than on the beachfront. So you can get a spacious villa with a pool for a more reasonable price. And if you feel like swimming — the pool is right there, with the beaches always close.
Who chooses Chalong
Chalong is popular with families, freelancers, business owners, and anyone who wants to live on Phuket, not just holiday. It’s not a resort in the classic sense, but a lived-in part of the island, where every day reminds you why people move to Thailand: for the sun, the sea, the easy pace, and that special island rhythm.
